Callicarpa
dichotoma ‘Issai’
Issai Beautyberry
Size: 4’ X 4’
Exposure: Full
sun to part shade
Flowering
Time:
Mid June to mid July
Ornamental
Characteristics:
Callicarpa
are a jewel for the garden. The
lavender flowers run along the entire
branch at both leaf axils during the start of summer, creating a very
delicate,
but effective show. The
clean, medium
green leaves allow it to exist in the garden relatively unnoticed after
flowering
in quiet wait for its second act of the season.
Around September the fruit light up the braches with
purple spheres,
exhibiting a color display unrivaled by the plant world for fall. These gorgeous ornaments
are an effective
element until late November or early December, depending on the time of
Old Man
Winter. All C. dichotoma are best treated as cut back
shrubs, meaning they are
reduced to about 10” in early spring.
This practice will maintain a dense growth habit and
increase its flower
power. Issai is
supposed to fruit
heavier and at a younger age. The
jury
is still out with
this, but it is why we are carrying 2 selections.
Both
are guaranteed show
stoppers though.
