Time:
April and May

Characteristics:
When
searching for a tough, low-growing shrub that requires
little maintenance, this is your guy (or girl depending on your
preference). With
nice clusters of white
blooms in the spring, ‘Hessei’ sets itself up for a season of
reliability and
beauty. The foliage remains clean and dense throughout the summer,
resisting
many diseases and insects. The
bright
red fruit really adds interest to the garden during the fall. While none of these
attributes will allow
this plant the status of “focal point” of the garden, its muted beauty
and
stability let the other design elements truly stand out. This was the case when Ben
experienced
‘Hessei’ at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Its dense habit and great
fruit display did
not overwhelm the area, but simply made it that much more attractive. Try this creeper on a dry
hillside. You won’t
be disappointed.
