Firstly, don't start questioning us on the actual species we have
assigned to this selection. We are not willing to look at
flwers and leaf margins to separate the plant.
This is likely one of the best loved selection at SRN. The
reasoning is not only because of its KY roots described below, but also
because of its extraordinary growth habit and ornamental
characteristics. Amazing Grace is a weeper. Its
graceful habit does not form a central leader like 'Pendula', which
translates into a broad "haystack" appearance (description stolen from
Paul Cappiello, Yew Dell Gardens). Fall color is a reliable
mix of yellows and bright oranges accompanied by a wonderful
cottoncandy scent.
Now for the history of Amazing Grace. The plants was
discovered by the lateTheodore Klein, who owned Yew Dell Nursery in
Crestwood, KY. His horticultural prowess extends to other
great selections such as Silver Cloud redbud, Sachet Witchhazel, and
Shannon Hydrangea. One of the orginal plants has resided at
Bernheim for about 3 decades. For two of them it was referred
to as 'Pendula'. During a walk around between Paul Cappiello,
Bob Hill, and Mike Hayman (likely other plant people were around also),
Bob came up with Amazing Grace to describe is graceful appearance and
separate this specific weeper from the others.
We currently offer budded plants, but plan to be offering rooted
cuttings in the near future.
