Abelia x
'Rose Creek'
Truly Compact Abelia
Size:
4' x 4'
Exposure:
Full Sun to Part Shade
Flower:
White fragrant clusters beginning in late June to frost
Ornamental Characteristics:
For
years our industry has had to use selections of Abelia's that were
better than the straight species, but required a significant amount of
maintenance to keep them in check. The ultimate sizes of many
selections were in excess of 6 feet and the ones that matured shorter
would throw out rediculously long shoots that needed removed throughout
the growing season. All this is over now!
From the same
breeding program as our beloved 'Canyon Creek', 'Rose Creek' has a very
compact growth habit that requires very little pruning to maintain.
In fact, we only have to prune out 1 gallons once during the
growing season and that is mainly to ensure good branching all the way
down. Not only is the plant wonderfully tight, it lacks the
tendancy to develop excessively long shoots on a sporadic basis.
All
this much needed improvement in growth habit does not sacrifice flower
power.
In late June, light pink closed buds are set all over the
plant.
As they open the color fades to a pure white that releases a
fragrance that fills the garden. The floral emissions remind
me
of a very nice, refined perfume; but not so heady one looses their
breath. The display will last for about 2 months.
However, there is more to be had. Behind each
flower, there is a set of 5 sepals. These structures turn a
very attractive rosey pink as the flowers mature and fade. It
is almost like a second flowering, comparable in effect to Heptacodium.
